PAN MACMILLAN BUYS THRILLING DYSTOPIAN TRILOGY: WOULD YOU GIVE UP 10 YEARS OF YOUR LIFE?
Pan Macmillan is delighted to announce the acquisition of Slavedays and sequels, by debut novelist Vic James. Senior Commissioning editor Bella Pagan bought UK and Commonwealth rights at auction for a six-figure sum, from Robert Kirby at United Agents.
Slavedays is an absolute firecracker of a novel. With its charismatic characters, evocative British setting and a stand-out conceptual twist, Vic James has come up with a truly winning formula. Her Orwellian page-turner will appeal to readers of all ages – from fans of Samantha Shannon’s The Bone Season to devotees of the Game of Thrones series, with its compulsive personal and dynastic power struggles.
The trilogy is set in a modern Britain, where everyone must endure ten years of slavery in service to a magically gifted aristocracy. Here, a teenage boy dreams of rebellion. His older sister yearns for love and knowledge. And – as political machinations clash with family intrigues – a dangerous young aristocrat will remake the world with his dark gifts.
Vic James said: ‘Who wouldn't dream of joining the Publisher of the Year? I loved Bella's vision and ambition for the Slavedays trilogy, and can't wait to get working with the talented team at Pan Macmillan.’
Pagan commented: ‘I absolutely adored Slavedays – WHAT a read! Vic James truly knows how to catch and hold a reader. I knew I just had to publish this, or how else could I get the next fabulous instalment ahead of anyone else.’
Vic James is a current affairs TV director who loves stories in all their forms. She has twice judged the Guardian’s Not The Booker Prize, has produced investigations for Channel 4 News, and is a huge Wattpad success story. The first draft of Slavedays was read more than a quarter of a million times in a year, on the Wattpad forum. And the book won the ‘Talk of the Town’ prize for most talked about Fantasy in Wattpad’s Watty Awards, in January 2015. Pan Macmillan will be publishing Slavedays from spring 2017, with the two sequels to follow.
Fleeing the horrors of Dickensian England and debts she cannot pay, Rosanna steals passage aboard a ship from a desperate young mother and her child. But all hope of a better life is snuffed out when the ship runs aground on Matron Island, a remote quarantine station off the coast of Tasmania. Trapped, Rosanna searches for a way out, discovering hidden chambers and a bizarre photography studio deep within the bowls of the station. Each step brings Rosanna closer to the truth and the creatures that await her in the dark . . .
The Mothers will be followed by The Scrimshaw Marionette in September and The Reparation in October 2015. All three books will be published in eBook format only.

New director Alfonso Flores brings us the creepy supernatural horror film LOS MUERTOS
Los Muertos is an American independent horror film laced with the legend, myths and folklore of Dia De Los Muertos and Catrina The Lady Of The Dead. All the traditional elements are uniquely integrated into a compelling modern story Alfonso is confident will raise the hairs on the back of your neck and seeing things moving in the dark when your at home.
The film began shooting in November of 2013 at the Linda Vista Hospital, formerly known as the Santa Fe Railroad Hospital. It was erected in 1904 and rebuilt in 1924 after a massive fire. Due to its high mortality rate throughout the years, Linda Vista was shut down in 1991. It was considered one of the most haunted locations in Los Angeles until it was completely remodeled by a real estate developer shortly after we finished filming the hospital sequences. It’s now Senior Housing.

THE LAST OUTPOST BY RICH HAWKINS
In a move reminiscent of Oasis’ infamous decision to release ‘Roll With It’ on the same day as Blur’s ‘Country House’, Crowded Quarantine press has received news that newly minted indie press The Sinister Horror Company has elected to release Kit Power’s debut novel ‘GodBomb!’’ on 28th September - the same day we launch Rich Hawkins novel ‘The Last Outpost’ (sequel to BFSA nominated novel ‘The Last Plague’).
Initially we were disappointed by this decision, but having reflected on it, we here at Crowded Quarantine pres have decided to embrace this rivalry. Sure, there’s been considerable advance buzz about Kit Power’s debut novel, but we’re confident that the fanbase Rich Hawkins has built to date, and the quality of his new novel, will secure us the result.
“It’s pretty much The Universal law of success that someone will think they can take a shot at you, in fact There’s One Born Every Minute.” said a source close to Crowded Quarantine. “But you know, while Kit is clearly not an entirely Charmless Man, we think Rich will come out on top - There’s No Other Way it could go, really. Though all the extra press attention has meant we’ve basically had to Park Life for a bit, to deal with the extra publicity.”
Team Hawkins and Team Power hashtags have already been spied on Twitter and Facebook, as fans of both authors clash ahead of the week of release, flooding book marketing groups and leading to accusations of spamming from both sides. It seems likely this will only increase as the 28th September approaches.
In response to questions about people who like both authors perhaps buying both books, the spokesperson said “Well, if you want to throw good money after bad, sure - but maybe buy GodBomb! the week after? The Last Outpost is a spectacular sequel from a novelist who's proven he can deliver - why mess with a winning formula?”
When asked if this was just a cynical marketing ploy to promote sales of both books, the spokesperson said nothing could be closer to the truth, and asked us not to give the game away.
GODBOMB! BY KIT POWER
In a move reminiscent of Blur’s infamous decision to release ‘Country House’ on the same day as Oasis ‘Roll With It’, The Sinister Horror Company has received news that respected indie press Crowded Quarantine has elected to release Rich Hawkins novel ‘The Last Outpost’ on 28th September - the same day we launch Kit Power’s debut novel ‘GodBomb!’
Initially we were disappointed by this decision, but having reflected on it, we here at The Sinister Horror Company have decided to embrace this rivalry. Sure, Rich Hawkins is BFSA nominated, and ‘The Last Outpost’ is a direct sequel to that nominated work, but we believe in Kit Power, and in the strength of his novel.
“Some Might Say it was just a coincidence, but we’re pretty sure it’s part of The Masterplan from Crowded Quarantine” said a source close to The Sinister Horror Company. “We decided not to Acquiesce, so we’re just going to Roll With It, D’Ya Know What I Mean? Were going to Put Our Money Where Our Mouth Is , and Bring It On Down for Kit”.
Team Power and Team Hawkins hashtags have already been spied on Twitter and Facebook, as fans of both authors clash ahead of the week of release, flooding book marketing groups and leading to accusations of spamming from both sides. It seems likely this will only increase as the 28th September approaches.
In response to questions about people who like both authors perhaps buying both books, the spokesperson said “Sure - if you’re going to buy two books that week, by all means pick up ‘The Last Outpost’ - we’ve got nothing against Rich or Crowded Quarantine. But you know, if you’re only going to buy one… make it GodBomb!, huh? Give the new guy a chance!”
When asked if this was just a cynical marketing ploy to promote sales of both books, the spokesperson said nothing could be closer to the truth, and asked us not to give the game away.
It's a long uphill trek for an author when trying to get potential readers to pay attention to their book. You can spam social media like a mad ,an, but that generally just turns people off. You can do interviews, you can do guest posts, or you can go the simple route and just pump out a press release. Which is all well and good wen the press release can stir up some buzz. However, when you get two press releases on the same day from two authors who, prior to the press release were your friends, that is clearly a load of made up nonsense you just have to shake your head in disgust.
Come on really Rich and Kit, did you really think I would fall for this, I may look like a fool, but I'm no fool when it comes to this. A so called rivalry between two writers who could barely get in a feud with a common garden snail, you are like a pair of sad lost little fluffy kittens. Which is probably a good thing as you think your feud is similar to that of Blur and Oasis, a feud so pathetic in its falseness.
I seriously worry about the pair of you, I thought at least one of you wasn't a halfwit. I'll let the two of you figure out which one of you is the halfwit. You could have least gone with a decent feud like Taylor Swift and Niki Manaj. At least there was always the chance of a cat fight, Albarn, and Gallagher were just a pair of tits, devoid of any talent or real integrity. You would never see Taylor ripping off a Monty Python song, or Minaj trying to be more Cockney than any other Cockney in the history of Cockney History.
Park Life, really, if that was me I would have covered the whole park in a big layer of concrete. Roll with it, yeah you roll with it Noel and Liam right down a big mountain into the path of an incoming train carrying three tons of poop infested water in a very unstable giant water balloon.
Kit, Rich, reconsider this silly thing that you have done, Shake it off and Slap on some truffle butter and change your wicked ways.

SOMEONE WANTS ANSWERS.
North Devon, England. 1995. A born-again revival meeting in a public building. The usual mix of the faithful, the curious, and the desperate. And one other – an atheist suicide bomber. He's angry. He wants answers. And if God doesn't come and talk to him personally, he's going to kill everyone in the building..
So, over the last eight months I've reviewed a lot of extreme horror for the Film Gutter series. Some had been good, some has been bad, some has been excellent. But only one of them has scored ten out of ten, which was the extraordinary Flowers from writer/director Phil Stevens. Back in May I called it 'the first masterpiece of extreme horror since Martyrs', and a second viewing did nothing to change my opinion. This is the work of a serious talent, and even more sickeningly Flowers was his debut feature, which left me hugely excited to see what would be coming next.
Well, now Phil is working on his section feature film, the mysteriously titled Lung II. Bearing in mind there was no Lung I I'm already suitably intrigued. The film is almost in the can, and there's now a kickstarter campaign to secure the final costs for post-production and ensure that the film comes out on time. If you're a fan of the Film Gutter series, or a fan of extreme horror in general, this is a director to seriously look out for and somebody who's well worth supporting if you like your indy films dark, disturbing and artistic. Just $25 will secure you a signed DVD, a set of production stills and a thank you in the credits of the film, and there are even better perks available for contributions of $50 and $100. If this beauty lives up to Flowers – and all the signs are looking good – then trust me that this is a great investment of your time and cash. Even if you can't pitch in, we'd love you to help us spread the word and make sure Lung II gets out there.
Because I realllllly want to see this film... ;-)
