Ginger Nuts of Horror
Who says horror writers don't care? Laura Mauro, one of the brightest and most talented of the new writers on the block is braving the shave For Macmillan Cancer Support. I've pledged to her sponsored shave, and I really think you should to. My dad died from liver cancer and the Macmillan Cancer Support network was a great help, not just to my dad in his final days but also to myself and my family. This is a charity that means a great deal to me. So please consider sponsoring Laura.
Here is what Laura has to say on why she is doing this
"I work as a healthcare assistant and have seen too many patients diagnosed with this horrible disease. It's a life-changing diagnosis - the treatment is gruelling, almost as bad as the disease itself, and although survival rates are improving in leaps and bounds it's not enough. And last year, I lost my grandad to cancer. It's difficult to watch patients suffer, let alone a loved one. Support is such an important thing, for the patient and for their family & friends, and Macmillan do a brilliant job providing that support. According to the main Macmillan page, £200 will pay for an entire day's worth of support, which is why I'm making that my target."

FEATURE FILM Dead Rising: Watchtower BASED ON CAPCOM’S GLOBALLY RENOWNED VIDEOGAME FRANCHISE RELEASES ON MAJOR DIGITAL MEDIA PLATFORMS INTERNATIONALLY JULY 2015
Content Media is set to release the highly anticipated Dead Rising: Watchtower internationally, presented by Legendary Digital, available to rent or own on all major digital platforms on selected dates worldwide across Europe, Asia, Australasia, South America and Africa from July 1st 2015. The international release follows its US release through Sony’s Crackle streaming service in March.
Legendary Digital presents Dead Rising: Watchtower, a Dead Rising/Contradiction Films Production- directed by Zach Lipovsky (Leprechaun: Origins), written and produced by Tim Carter (Mortal Kombat: Legacy), and executive produced by Tomas Harlan (Mortal Kombat: Legacy) and Lorenzo di Bonaventura (the Transformers franchise). Based on the widely popular Capcom videogame franchise Dead Rising®, Dead Rising: Watchtower features an all-star cast including Jesse Metcalfe (Dallas, John Tucker Must Die), Meghan Ory (Once Upon a Time, Intelligence), Virginia Madsen (Sideways, Candyman), Dennis Haysbert (24; Men, Women & Children) and Rob Riggle (22 Jump Street, The Hangover).
Dead Rising: Watchtower follows Chase Carter (Jesse Metcalfe), a reporter trying to make it big – but the pursuit of his career-defining story leads him into the heart of a zombie-infested warzone. East Mission, Oregon is locked down after police find the bodies of what appear to be victims of a zombie attack. Zombies are not a new phenomenon, but outbreaks are uncommon. Past incidents were only just contained in time and the country is nervous. When two ambitious Net 2.0 reporters, Chase and his colleague Jordan, get inside the quarantine zone to report on a large group of civilians trapped in an inner city dome stadium, they realise they’re waiting for a rescue that isn’t coming.
Many of those abandoned inside are survivors of past outbreaks who carry the zombie virus in their blood. They only survive by taking the antidote once every 24 hours -- a drug called Zombrex. When the local drug supply mysteriously fails, a small crisis explodes into mass panic and catastrophe.
The story unfolds from two perspectives: survivors inside the city and officials and the media on the outside. Unlike virtually all other zombie narratives, the world hasn’t ended. The outbreak is a large-scale natural disaster that the rest of the world watches on TV. After Jordan manages to escape the quarantine zone, she sets out to unravel the conspiracy behind the failed Zombrex, while Chase is trapped inside with a few others like tough loner with a secret Crystal (Meghan Ory) and grief-stricken mother Maggie (Virginia Madsen), battling
to survive. Their perilous, action-packed journey to escape simultaneously forces them to question what they’re willing to do to survive and, ultimately, their own sense of humanity.
The Dead Rising® game franchise has sold over 8.2 Million copies worldwide. Publisher Capcom has sold 200 Million game copies worldwide, including those from juggernaut series Resident Evil®, Street Fighter® and Mega Man®.
HORROR ANTHOLOGY SAVAGE BEASTS IS A NIGHTMARE OF SUPERNATURAL, SCIENCE AND SOUNDFeatures Tales of Dark Fiction Inspired by the Best in Music, Grey Matter Reveals Table of ContentsThere’s no longer any need to ask yourself what Nine Inch Nails, Grace Jones, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Cuban missile crisis have in common. The answer can be found in the upcoming anthology of modern horror and speculative fiction from Grey Matter Press, SAVAGE BEASTS.
German philosopher Friedrich Neitzsche once said that “without music, life would be a mistake.” And the diverse assembly of international authors whose work is featured in SAVAGE BEASTS proves his point in dramatic fashion. Collectively, this group of dark fiction composers take readers on a nightmarish journey through the vistas of supernatural, science and sound with tales that will be the mistake of your life not to read.
Dark fiction fans are in for a mind-bending trip of horror when SAVAGE BEASTS, the auditory extravaganza from Chicago-based Grey Matter Press, sees its worldwide release on Tuesday, August 11.
Featuring eleven short stories that offer readers a terrifying written recital, the genre fiction authors whose music-influenced work is collected in SAVAGE BEASTS, reflect some of the freshest voices in horror, science fiction and speculative fiction.
“The authors in this book have turned up the volume on dark fiction to dangerous levels in this incredibly creative anthology,” said Anthony Rivera, Grey Matter Press publisher and editor. “Their work in SAVAGE BEASTS, explores a diverse range of scenarios, each inspired in some way by the music we’ve all grown up listening to.
SAVAGE BEASTS, is a compendium of modern horror influenced by some of the greatest names in music. These include rock icons Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd, The Cranberries, Genesis, Peter Gabriel and Tom Petty; Danish death metal group Pestilence; new wave and dancehall diva Grace Jones; Portuguese electronic house duo Underground Sound of Lisbon; indie rockers School of Seven Bells; classical composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms; as well as Walt Disney and the studio’s famous “It’s a Small World,” a song that was itself inspired by the 1962 US/USSR standoff known as the Cuban missile crisis.
“When we placed the call for this anthology, we didn’t know what to expect from the authors, but we knew it was going to be great,” said Rivera. “And we weren’t wrong. The array of work they came with for this amazing collection of stories, each based on their own personal musical influences, is a testament to the talent found in SAVAGE BEASTS.”
Contributors to SAVAGE BEASTS include the Bram Stoker Award-nominated John F.D. Taff; Pushcart nominees Edward Morris and Konstantine Paradias; political and entertainment journalist Shawn Macomber, whose work has been published in FANGORIA, Rue Morgue, Maxim and the Wall Street Journal; editor-in-chief of the highly respected Jamais Vu magazine, Paul Michael Anderson; accomplished authors Karen Runge, E. Vancouver, B.C.-May 26, 2015) The long hours and hard work have paid off as CineCoup announced last night that Black Land has made it to the TOP 5 in their Film Accelerator contest! From the 120 films originally submitted, winning one of the TOP 5 spots ensures that the Black Land script will be optioned for development, with the opportunity to present the film at the World Media Festival in Banff in June. Being in the top 5 brings Shaine Jones and the Black Land team one step closer to realizing their vision of seeing their film being made with the chance to garner up to $1 Million in production financing.
“It’s been a great ride and we are beyond excited to have been chosen as one of the final 5 films”, says producer and director Shaine Jones, “we have enjoyed the journey and are grateful to the fans and to the CineCoup board for their support.”
The films that make it to the final 5 were chosen by the Cinecoup Board rather than fan vote. Criteria for the top 5 include the marketability to audiences as well as the project’s viability to be made into a feature film or episodic series.
The Cinecoup Film Accelerator is an independent studio that supports independent projects and creative talent by helping film makers connect with untapped audiences. Each film advances through fan participation, which combines performance indicators, voting and evaluation from CineCoup producers. Based on which films make it through each round, CineCoup guarantees to option a minimum of five projects and finance one project with (up to) $1 Million in production financing and a release in Cineplex Theatres.
The films storyline was sparked by a terrifying incident that led to Shaine getting lost in the woods as a child. It didn’t destroy his lifelong fascination for exploring the great outdoors, but instead, it gave him an idea: How quickly can the forest turn on you; with darkness falling and the possibility of being chased by a supernatural monster?
“Black Land” tells the intriguing story of an environmental assessment gone wrong, creating the perfect opportunity for unsuspecting scientists to fall prey to ancient evil while working on an oil pipeline survey. The twist and turns of the characters and their plight keeps viewers on the edge of their seat, making them wonder what lies behind the serenity of the tall forests-and they may not have to wait long to find out.

Caravan is a cautionary tale set in the 90's which follows a young family on a road-trip. As night falls the family pull in for a routine rest-stop where their caravan is invaded by a malevolent intruder.
The idea for the short was originally inspired by Nathan’s personal experiences of family road-trips and growing up in the 90s. Through the writing process Sarah was inspired by the baby-sitter urban legend that was adapted into the feature film “When a Stranger Calls”. She wanted to see how a film like this could play out on the road and to see where that could lead the story and characters.
Thematically the film revolves around the anxieties of parenthood and the questions parents ask themselves when raising their kids.
Caravan also focuses on not getting too caught up in life, enjoying the journey rather than focusing on the destination
How the funds will be used
While the basic production costs for the shoot have been sourced we are still a long way from affording the special effects for the film.
Not only are films expensive to make but they're even more expensive to make safely. Therefore we would rather raise funds to cover studio hire fees than risk our cast and crew's health and safety because at the end of the day that's the most important aspect of a production.
What we need the additional $2500 for includes:
- Studio hire expenses
- Mastering & grade
- Professional lights to achieve the look we need
- Practical effects- SFX makeup, blood, all the fun stuff
Any additional funds we receive for the film will go straight into affording VFX.
