Ginger Nuts of Horror
Peaceful Valley is about to become a slaughterhouse!
For the first time ever, Samhain Publishing will serialize a terrifying original novel, Savage Species, in five installments, with new installments coming every two weeks. Here, as a special introduction to the fear that awaits you in Savage Species, is the first section, Night Terrors, absolutely free!
Jesse thinks he’s caught a break when he, the girl of his dreams, and her friend are assigned by their newspaper to cover the opening weekend of the Peaceful Valley Nature Preserve, a sprawling, isolated state park. But the construction of the park has stirred an evil that has lain dormant for nearly a century, and the three young people—as well as every man, woman, and child unlucky enough to be attending the grand opening—are about to encounter the most horrific creatures to ever walk the earth. A species so ferocious that Peaceful Valley is about to be plunged into a nightmare of bloodshed and damnation.
About The Author
Jonathan Janz grew up between a dark forest and a graveyard. In a way, that explains everything. Brian Keene named his debut novel The Sorrows “the best horror novel of 2012.” The Library Journal deemed his follow-up, House of Skin, “reminiscent of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House and Peter Straub’s Ghost Story.”
Samhain Horror will also publish his third novel, The Darkest Lullaby, in April. Look for his fourth novel, an action-packed survival horror thriller called Savage Species, this summer. His fifth novel Dust Devils, a vampire western set in 1885 New Mexico, will be published in February of 2014. He has also written three novellas (The Clearing of Travis Coble, Old Order, and Witching Hour Theatre) and several short stories.
His primary interests are his wonderful wife and his three amazing children, and though he realizes that every author’s wife and children are wonderful and amazing, in this case the cliché happens to be true. The sky is brushed through with copper. The land is a frozen ruin. Aliens have slipped through the space between spaces to consume humanity with their endless obscene desires. Rifts in the fabric of the world bleed suggestion. My son waits out there beneath a curious orange sun.
I . . . I have to find him.

"Gunhus delivers a taut supernatural thriller...all the chops of an action-packed horror tale." - Kirkus Reviews
Emotionally scarred from a car accident in which a little girl was killed, Jack Tremont moves his family from Southern California to Prescott City in the quiet mountains of Western Maryland. At first, the small town appears to be the perfect place to reconnect with his family and to cure his troubled conscience, but Jack soon discovers he has left one nightmare only to walk into another. When a stranger who has been struck by lightning dies in Jack's arms, a child's voice comes from the man's smoldering body to issue a warning:
They're coming for your little girl, Jack. . . you better run. Take your family and run.
The warning turns prophetic when a local cult targets Jack's five year-old daughter Sarah and Jack finds himself in a fight against dark, supernatural forces that he cannot begin to understand. With the help of a mysterious Native American, Jack uncovers more than just a conspiracy that extends into the small community, but an ancient mystery larger than anything he could have imagined. Suddenly, he's not only fighting for his family, but also to stop a devastating evil from escaping into the world. Above all, he must rush against the clock to save his little girl.

It's been two days since the event, and I am still on buzz. Many people say that you shouldn't meet your heroes, but I can assure you that in the the case of Joe Hill, you really need to meet him.
In the lead up to the event I went through a lot of emotions, panic, feelings of inadequacy, to actually saying sod it it will be alright. Those who know me personally know that I'm not so much a panicker, I'm more a run around like a headless chicken that has been set on fire type of person. Plagued with huge feelings of self doubt. So when I was travelling down to the event on the bus, and decided to watch You Tube Videos of Social Distortion rather than go over the huge amount of questions I had, to ask myself what happened to the real jim and who the hell is this in my head. HOWEVER
From Robert Dunbar’s introduction to VORTEX: Essays from a Sea of Nightmares
They say a basis in fact underlies most legends. They say it all the time, all those Wise Elders in all those old horror films, the high priests, the scientists, the gypsy fortune tellers. On this single issue they agree unanimously. Deep currents of tradition and superstition swirl through most classic works of horror fiction. They spring from deep within us, these nightmares, these folktales. They speak of our deepest needs, the ones we have all been taught since childhood never to put into words, because dreams reveal our other face, the one we keep hidden, the Hyde to mankind’s collective Jekyll. Our most primitive ancestors never died, the ones who killed with rocks and clubs and clawing hands. No, they remain within us still. And when we sleep, they speak.
Vampires and werewolves, sea hags and witches, even the Jersey Devil – the monsters teeming in our subconscious minds are with us always. VORTEX explores the origins of some of mankind’s oldest folklore and the influence of that lore on literature, film and popular culture.
Available in paperback from Amazon.
In the run up to the most important night of my life, outside of family things obviously, Michael Wilson has kindly interviewed Ellie Wixon, who is not only a wonderful person, but to paraphrase a famous beer, probably the best book seller in the world. Ellie single handedly secured the event and organised it all. Michael also kindly interviewed me about my forthcoming interview with horror master Joe Hill.

It has been a while since I last read a new story from the wonderful Cate Gardner. Thankfully, Peter Coleborn, and Alchemy Press have just released this as the first of their new Novella series.
If you haven't read Cate's work, then shame on you, pick a copy of this novella, and discover a new favourite author.
When the mirror released Kathleen into the unknown, for the briefest of moments she giggled and realised that she’d never laughed before. She had been a blank canvas, sitting and waiting in a room and occasionally bouncing from wall to wall desperate for freedom - and now she was out. White walls no longer surrounded her. In this new place, a thousand mirrors spun reflecting worlds.
Available in Kindle format via Amazon. Only £1.35 or $2.05 in funny money.
Dark Fuse is one of those publishers that really has its finger on the pulse. I have had 100% satisfaction from everything I have read from them, and looking at this line up of future releases this is going to continue for a long time.
Conjure House by Gary Fry
eBook $4.99 | Paperback $16.99 | Limited HC $65
Release Date: July 2013
The village of Deepvale has a sinister past. Built in the 1400s, it has been home to a number of sordid characters, including Peter Suman, known locally as 'The Conjurer' due to the diabolical experiments he was rumored to have conducted during the 19th Century, in a dark old house beside a lake.
In the 1990s, after a bet with his elder brother and three friends, seven-year-old Simon Mallinson goes missing inside the now derelict Conjurer's House.
Fifteen years later, his brother Anthony is back in Deepvale, following the brutal deaths of his parents. And strange events have begun to occur in the village again, including the apparent return of young Simon and his creepy new friends. Worse still, Peter Suman appears to be back, too, bent on achieving what he failed to do over a hundred years earlier…
Conjure House, a novel of cosmic terror from Gary Fry.
